Where Do Web Sites Come From?

A web site is displayed on the Internet by a computer called a server that is connected to the Internet.

How Do I Get My Web Site On A Server?

Servers are run by businesses called Hosts. Hosts own servers and rent the use of their servers to people who have web sites. Simply put, you pay a host to show your web site on the Internet.

How Do People See My Web Site On The Internet?

Visitors type your Domain Name into the address window of their browser, or click on a link to your web site. Each web site has a Domain Name, also called a Universal Resource Locator or URL. Most people call them Web Addresses. They are different names for the same thing. A URL looks like this…

www.yoursite.com

When you type a URL into the address window of your browser, the browser contacts a computer connected to the Internet called a DNS (Domain Name Server) which looks up the URL and returns the IP Number. The IP Number is like a phone number and is the real way your web site is looked up. An IP Number looks like this, 233.145.199.202. The reason we don’t use the IP numbers directly is names are easier for humans to remember.

The browser then uses the IP Number to contact the web site’s server and tell it to send a copy of the web site page requested to your computer. Your computer also has an IP Number that is sent to the host so your copy of that web page can be delivered to you.

How Do I Get A Domain Name?

Easy, you buy one from a business called a Domain Name Registrar. The cost is $10 - $15 per year.
